Financial Freedom (to Choose)

The sharing in the book, First Things First by Stephen R. Covey, shaped my view early in my career life on what it means by being financially free...

"One day, I was sitting in a company meeting where people were discussing important policies that could have a significant negative impact on the environment. As I sat there, I came to the realization that, while I felt very strongly about these issues, I was essentially silent.

'Why?' I asked myself. 'Why am I afraid to open my mouth? When I was hired into this company from the outside years ago, I had no fear. I openly expressed my feelings and concerns. I was confident. I felt I could act with integrity. What's made the difference?'

As I thought about it, I realized that since that time, I had acquired substantial retirement benefits. I'd bought a new home. I was making payments on a new boat. Essentially, I did't want to do anything that might jeopardize my economic security. I realized the "golden handcuffs" held me bound.

At that point, I made two resolutions: to get my financial affairs in order and build up some reserves, and to continually improve my marketability. I never wanted to be in a position where my integrity was compromised by my dependence on a job."

This is the single most important reason of why financial freedom is important. You will never be forced to do things that against your conscience.

To Joint or Not to Joint

Yesterday Simon and Caroline from Light and Easy’s Light Breakfast Radio Show brought up a very interesting topic, “should a married couple hold joint bank account or should they keep their personal bank accounts separate?”

We are in favour of holding a joint bank account. We understand the difficulties and we have solutions to overcome them. Read our view and method on Joint Bank Account for Married Couple.

Financial Freedom

"When it comes to money, freedom starts to happen when what you do, think and say are one. You'll never be free if you say that you have more than enough, then act as if and think you don't. You'll never be free if you think you don't have enough, then act as if and say you do. You will have enough when you believe you will and take the actions to express that belief. And you'll have more than enough when you realize that you can be rich at any income because you are more than your money, you are more than your job or title and than the car you drive or the clothing you wear..."
