Have you tried e-Filing?

This is the first year that our Inland Revenue Board (IRB) introduces e-Filing, a process to file our income tax return online. I have an interesting experience to write.

The first step to do your e-Filing is to get your "Slip Pendaftaran Sijil Digital e-Filing". It contains a private and confidential PIN number sealed like your bank credit card's PIN number.

I went to Kelana Jaya branch to get my Slip. The location to get the Slip is at the sixth floor of Brem Tower. There was a long que. Luckily there were enough chairs for us to sit and wait. I registered myself at the counter, writing down my name, IC number, tax reference number and telephone number. This was the first time and the LAST time my information was asked. No identity verification.

I waited for about 45 minutes before my name was called. An officer who walked around passed me a Slip with my name hand-written on it. One side of the Slip was torn. I was a bit doubtful because I was not asked to show my IC. I asked, "Ini saja? Boleh balik? Tak payah tengok IC?" "Tak, IC nombor dan tax nombor ok, match."

Looking at the torn Slip, I supposed there was a mistake somewhere in the process that the officer had to open it up to check. I think. Looking at the crowd, they may be just too busy in verifying my identity before handing me the Slip. No problem, I should not be too particular about this.

The problem arose when I login to https://e.hasil.org.my. After filling in the information and click on the "Hantar" button, the reply was "Pengesahan Maklumat Tidak Berjaya. No. Pengenalan Dan No. Rujukan Cukai Tidak Wujud." Oops!

I double checked the information. Everything was in order. I tried once more, the outcome was the same. Finally I gave up.

I looked at the Slip and found a customer service e-mail address on it. I wrote an email to the address. I wrote,

Hi,

I got my PIN number and log on to https://e.hasil.org.my

When "daftar sijil digital" the outcome is that "Pengesahan Maklumat Tidak Berjaya. No. Pengenalan Dan No. Rujukan Cukai Tidak Wujud."

I suspect the officer who gave me the Slip with PIN number had made a mistake. It was kelam kabut then. My slip was partially torn off when I received the slip.

Kindly help to resolve the problem. Should I provide you my IC and my tax number?

Thanks.
regards,

Now, I am waiting for the reply.

I know most people would get a smooth ride in their e-Filing process. I am not saying eFiling is a bad idea just because I am having such problem. But it is interesting to see how event unfold later. Meanwhile I am filling up my tax return manually.

I will update this column when the customercare@digicert.com.my reply my query.

However, here is the step-by-step guide to e-Filing published in theSun newspaper on 19 April 2006. I find it useful.
