Have you tried e-Filing?
This is the first year that our Inland Revenue Board (IRB) introduces e-Filing, a process to file our income tax return online. I have an interesting experience to write.
The first step to do your e-Filing is to get your "Slip Pendaftaran Sijil Digital e-Filing". It contains a private and confidential PIN number sealed like your bank credit card's PIN number.
I went to Kelana Jaya branch to get my Slip. The location to get the Slip is at the sixth floor of Brem Tower. There was a long que. Luckily there were enough chairs for us to sit and wait. I registered myself at the counter, writing down my name, IC number, tax reference number and telephone number. This was the first time and the LAST time my information was asked. No identity verification.
I waited for about 45 minutes before my name was called. An officer who walked around passed me a Slip with my name hand-written on it. One side of the Slip was torn. I was a bit doubtful because I was not asked to show my IC. I asked, "Ini saja? Boleh balik? Tak payah tengok IC?" "Tak, IC nombor dan tax nombor ok, match."
Looking at the torn Slip, I supposed there was a mistake somewhere in the process that the officer had to open it up to check. I think. Looking at the crowd, they may be just too busy in verifying my identity before handing me the Slip. No problem, I should not be too particular about this.
The problem arose when I login to https://e.hasil.org.my. After filling in the information and click on the "Hantar" button, the reply was "Pengesahan Maklumat Tidak Berjaya. No. Pengenalan Dan No. Rujukan Cukai Tidak Wujud." Oops!
I double checked the information. Everything was in order. I tried once more, the outcome was the same. Finally I gave up.
I looked at the Slip and found a customer service e-mail address on it. I wrote an email to the address. I wrote,
Hi,
I got my PIN number and log on to https://e.hasil.org.my
When "daftar sijil digital" the outcome is that "Pengesahan Maklumat Tidak Berjaya. No. Pengenalan Dan No. Rujukan Cukai Tidak Wujud."
I suspect the officer who gave me the Slip with PIN number had made a mistake. It was kelam kabut then. My slip was partially torn off when I received the slip.
Kindly help to resolve the problem. Should I provide you my IC and my tax number?
Thanks.
regards,
Now, I am waiting for the reply.
I know most people would get a smooth ride in their e-Filing process. I am not saying eFiling is a bad idea just because I am having such problem. But it is interesting to see how event unfold later. Meanwhile I am filling up my tax return manually.
I will update this column when the customercare@digicert.com.my reply my query.
However, here is the step-by-step guide to e-Filing published in theSun newspaper on 19 April 2006. I find it useful.

KWSP/ EPF changes to Housing and Education Withdrawals
Employees Provident Fund (EPF) or KWSP made an announcement on 10 April 2006 over the Withdrawal Scheme for repayment of housing loan and education expenses.
"Under the Housing Withdrawal, members can now withdraw their Account II savings once every year to reduce or settle their housing loans. Withdrawals can be made annually from the last date of withdrawal, with a minimum amount of RM500.
In addition, members are now given the flexibility to help their spouses reduce or settle their housing loans even if the member is not a joint owner, a requirement prior to this new amendment to the EPF's procedure. Some of the conditions for this withdrawal include that the member shall not be the borrower, the spouse is the purchaser and borrower of the housing loan, the property is mortgaged with the bank and proof of marriage."
These are the changes much welcomed by the community.
EPF money is for retirement. A house free of mortgage is for retirment. From the perspective of financial, education is to increase earning capability of our labour works. Theoretically, the increased earnings of our labour works should increase our nest egg for retirment.
And the money spent on our children education is a form of retirement plan too, well, based on our current social structure.
Malaysia Scholarship Guide 2006
If you or your children are still studying in school, college or university, get a copy of this "Malaysia Scholarship Guide 2006" from any MPH book store. I got a copy from Subang Parade's MPH book store at RM10.00 only.
The guide listed 200 scholarships and study loans available for Malaysians provided by government bodies, private and public corporations, organisations, trust funds, etc. The scholarships listing were broken into two sections, i.e. undergraduate and post graduate covering local and overseas study opportunities.
Some organisations provide the scholarship information and application procedures online, however a large number of them require applicant to write to them in snail mail.
Personally I think the Guide is great. Those who visited FPM dot com before know that we do have a financial directory that includes a long list of scholarships available online for Malaysians. However, it is not as comprehensive as this Malaysian Scholarship Guide 2006.
